Are There Elephants in Nairobi National Park? The Reality

Are there elephants in Nairobi National Park? Wild elephants? No… Surprising, I know, but the absence of these magnificent creatures is intentional. The elephants were relocated to other parks to prevent human-wildlife conflict due to the park’s close proximity to the city.

You can, however, spot them in the nearby David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust which is within the park’s boundaries.

Exploring the Diverse Wildlife of Nairobi National Park

While the absence of wild elephants might surprise some, Nairobi National Park teems with a rich variety of wildlife. The park is a sanctuary for both black and white rhinos, along with buffaloes, elusive leopards, herds of zebras, various types of antelope, wallowing hippos, and even the occasional crocodile. These incredible animals offer unforgettable wildlife experiences in Nairobi, all within a stone’s throw of the bustling city.

The David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage: A Haven Within Reach

For those specifically hoping to witness elephants near Nairobi, a remarkable opportunity awaits within the very same park: the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. This globally recognized elephant sanctuary dedicates itself to rescuing and lovingly raising orphaned baby elephants from across Kenya, eventually reintroducing them to the wild.

Here’s why, time and again, my guests and I fall in love with the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage.

You get to witness Young Elephants up close, playing in the mud, socializing with each other, and guzzling down giant milk bottles from their keepers.

You get to listen to the elephant’s heartwarming stories of rescue and hope. Each elephant has a name and story. Listening to how they were saved and rescued will literally bring you to tears.

However, you should remember that;

The orphanage has specific visiting times: These captivating interactions occur for a limited time each day, typically between 11 am and 12 pm.

It operated on a Pre-Booking basis: Entry to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nursery is strictly by advance booking only. Planning your visit ahead is crucial to secure your spot.

Beyond Elephants: Other Wildlife Encounters in Nairobi

Nairobi’s appeal extends beyond the possibility of seeing orphaned elephants. Several other wildlife experiences in Nairobi await exploration. Consider a visit to the Nairobi Animal Orphanage, providing care for a range of rescued animals. For a unique perspective on Kenya’s diverse ecosystems, the elevated boardwalks of the Nairobi Safari Walk are a fantastic option. You can also get up close with giraffes at the Giraffe Centre Nairobi.

About the Author

Hi there? My name is Ian Waruingi, a KPSGA-certified guide and tour consultant for AJ Kenya Safaris. I’ve been to Nairobi National Park more times than I can count, planned countless tours here, and witnessed unforgettable moments (like did you know wildebeests can walk within minutes of birth? That one caught me by surprise!).

I’ve also watched baby elephants at the orphanage slurp down bottles of milk, chase each other around in the dust, and melt the hearts of everyone watching.

These moments, big and small, are why I absolutely adore this park, and I can’t wait to help you experience it for yourself.
