Go inside ‘Out of Africa’: Your Karen Blixen Museum Guide

As a seasoned guide, I’ve been to countless historical sites, but there’s something truly intimate about wandering through the rooms of the Karen Blixen Museum. This beautiful historical house is nestled in the peaceful Karen area of Nairobi, Kenya. It offers a  glimpse into the life of the famous Danish author, Karen Blixen, also known as Isak Dinesen, who wrote the classic memoir Out of Africa about her time in colonial Kenya. If you’re planning to visit Karen Blixen Museum, this is your guide.

Explore the Heart of the Coffee Farm

The beautifully preserved farmhouse, once the hub of her coffee farm near the Ngong Hills, now stands as a testament to her life and times. As you walk through the rooms you’ll see antique furniture and personal items that bring to life what life was like in early 20th century Kenya. You also see original photographs and letters of Baroness Karen Blixen (my personal favorite) and learn about the challenges and regards of running a coffee farm back then.

Get Lost in the Gardens

Anytime I visit the museum, I like to get lost in her gardens. I take a leisurely stroll through the lawns and flowerbeds and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Ngong Hills. These grounds are a space to reflect on the natural beauty that surrounded her writing.

Plan Your Visit: Practical Info

The Karen Blixen Museum is located in the Karen suburb of Nairobi so it’s easy to get to. To get more out of your visit, I recommend joining a Karen Blixen Museum tour. This way you’ll hear fascinating  stories about Blixen’s life, the farm’s history and the objects on display.

For information on Karen Blixen Museum tickets and Karen Blixen Museum opening hours check the National Museums of Kenya – Karen Blixen website. You can find all the visitor information including booking details for guided tours on the National Museums of Kenya website.

The Enduring Allure of ‘Out of Africa’ and Isak Dinesen

Beyond its physical presence, the museum stands as a powerful tribute to Isak Dinesen, the literary persona of Karen Blixen, and the lasting impact of her evocative storytelling, particularly in Out of Africa. Her vivid descriptions brought the landscapes and narratives of colonial Kenya to readers worldwide. While the primary filming locations for the Out of Africa movie were elsewhere, the museum provides an authentic link to her life during that transformative period. For those interested in literary tourism Nairobi, a visit to the Karen Blixen house is an absolute must.

About the Author

Hi there? My name is Ian Waruingi, a KPSGA-certified guide and tour consultant for AJ Kenya Safaris. I’ve been to Nairobi National Park more times than I can count, planned countless tours here, and witnessed unforgettable moments (like did you know wildebeests can walk within minutes of birth? That one caught me by surprise!).

I’ve also watched baby elephants at the orphanage slurp down bottles of milk and walked down memory lane at the Karen Blixen Museum. These moments, big and small, are why I absolutely love Kenya, and I can’t wait to help you experience it for yourself.
