Why Choose a Nairobi National Park Safari?
Here are four reasons I think Nairobi National Park deserves a spot on your safari list.
Convenience
Located only 9.7km away from the city centre, Nairobi National Park is so close you can pop in for a half-day safari and still be back in time for lunch.
Wildlife Galore
Despite being in the city, the park is teeming with wildlife. It is home to over 100 mammal species and four of the “Big Five”- lions, leopards, buffalo and rhinos.
Rhino Sanctuary
Nairobi National Park is home to approximately 111 black rhinos and a few white rhinos.
More Than Just Game Drives
While a game drive in Nairobi National Park is a must do, the park also offers birdwatching and designated picnic sites like the Mokoiyet Picnic Spot, Impala Observation Point, Kingfisher Picnic Site, and the Ivory Burning Site.
Planning Your Safari Adventure
Over the years, I’ve learned that a little preparation can turn a good safari into an unforgettable one. Here are a few things I always consider when planning a Nairobi National Park tour.
When to Visit?
The dry seasons, June to October and January to February are the best time to visit Nairobi National Park for wildlife viewing. The vegetation is less dense making it easier to see animals.
Getting to the Park
Nairobi National Park is just a short 25-minute drive from the city centre and even closer if you’re coming from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO).
From the City Centre, head south on Langata Road. Signs will direct you to the park. The drive takes about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic.
From JKIA, take Mombasa Road to the city then follow the signs to Langata Road to the park. The drive takes about 30-45 minutes.
Costs: Nairobi National Park Entry Fees
Check the official Kenya Wildlife Service website for the latest information on Nairobi National Park entry fees for residents and non residents.
What to Pack
To make the most of your safari tour remember to bring: plenty of water, a good camera and binoculars, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes
Wildlife: Safari Options
With our professional safari guide you can experience the best of Nairobi national park. Here are some of the activities and things I’d recommend doing in Nairobi park.
Game Drive
A game drive is the most popular way to see the park. Experienced drivers will navigate the tracks and increase your chances of seeing the amazing animals.
Meet the Park’s Residents
During your wildlife safari look out for: Lions, often lounging in the sun or on the hunt. Leopards, sometimes in trees or thickets. Large herds of buffalo on the plains. Giraffes roaming the acacia woodlands. Zebras with their stripes. Antelopes like gazelles and wildebeest.
Other Ways to Explore
Beyond game drives, Nairobi National Park offers; guided walking safaris, birdwatching tours, and photography safaris to capture the landscapes and wildlife.
More of Nairobi Wildlife
While the park itself is a highlight, consider visiting:
- David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and see elephant and rhino conservation in action.
- Giraffe Centre Nairobi where you can feed and pet the giraffes.
Demerits of Nairobi National Park Safari:
Although a safari to this park is an authentic Kenya safari experience, the park is small compared to destinations such as the Masai Mara, Amboseli National Park, and Tsavo. It’s also only home to 4 of the big 5, meaning guests could get a more memorable experience on a safari to the Masai Mara, which boasts a comparatively higher wildlife density and is home to all the big 5. Also, as both the UK and US governments have cautioned, you need to exercise a high degree of caution during your time in Nairobi due to the threat of terrorism and violent crimes which are common in Nairobi.
