Plan Your Unforgettable Self-Drive Safari

So how do I plan for a self-drive safari in Nairobi National Park? I’ve put together a few points to help you have a successful self-drive safari. After all, venturing into driving in Nairobi National Park requires some thought to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here’s my guide to planning:

  • Choosing the Right Vehicle: The type of vehicle you choose will impact your comfort and ability to navigate the park. While some routes are accessible with standard cars, I highly recommend a 4×4 rental for varied terrains especially during the rainy seasons. Make sure your chosen vehicle for Nairobi National Park self-drive has good visibility for wildlife spotting. One way to do this is to hire a 4×4 vehicle from professional car hires like Bestcarsforsaleinkenya.co.ke
  • Understanding Park Entry Rules: You’ll need to pay the Nairobi National Park entrance fees for self-drive safari upon arrival.

Here’s a breakdown of the rates:

  • Kenyan citizens MUST carry their original IDs for verification at the gate
  • Those from EAC member countries must have their proof of residency ready, such as passports with the relevant entry stamps or resident permits

Please note: park fees are paid online through the eCitizen platform – you should pay the fee a day before to avoid spending a lot of time at the gate.

  • Master Navigation: While the park has signs, I’ve found that having a map is key to independent exploration. You can get a Nairobi National Park map for self-drive at the entrance gate or download a digital version. I always make a point to study the self-drive routes in advance  to optimize my game viewing and explore different areas of the park.
  • Best Time to Visit for Wildlife Viewing: The best time for self-drive Nairobi National Park is during the dry seasons (June to October and January to February). During these periods the vegetation is less dense and wildlife is easier to spot. Animals also congregate around water sources. However the park offers unique experiences throughout the year, the green season offers lush landscapes and newborn sightings.

See the Biodiversity on Your Self-Drive

A self-drive Nairobi National Park wildlife viewing tour promises amazing encounters with many animals. Look out for:

  • African Icons: Lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, Cape buffaloes, plains zebras, Maasai giraffes and various antelope species. Nairobi National Park is also a key conservation site for the endangered black rhino.

Pro tip: dust clouds, moving grass, and circling vultures are subtle signs that could lead you to where the wildlife is.

  • Birdwatcher’s Paradise: For bird enthusiasts, the park is a haven, with more than 400 bird species residing there. Binoculars are a must have.

Pro tip: the Hyena Dam and Mokoiyet Valley are one of my favorite bird watching spots in the park.

  • Diverse Landscapes: Beyond the wildlife, enjoy the varied landscapes of the park – open grasslands, rolling hills, acacia woodlands and riverine ecosystems.

Tips for a Safe and Fun Self-Drive

Your safety and the wildlife’s is paramount during your self-drive Nairobi park. Here are tips I follow to ensure my experience is safe and enjoyable:

  • Stay in Your Vehicle: Unless you are in designated picnic sites or marked viewing areas, always stay inside your vehicle. This is for your safety and to not disturb the animals.
  • Keep a Safe Distance from Wildlife: Never approach or interact with the animals. Observe them from a safe and considerate distance. Binoculars or telephoto lenses can enhance your view without getting too close.
  • Follow Park Rules: Adhere to all self-drive Nairobi National Park rules including speed limits and staying on designated roads and tracks. Off-road driving is not allowed and can attract penalties.
  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Pay attention to the animals around you and be cautious especially near big or unpredictable species.
  • Pack Essentials: Carry enough water, snacks, sunscreen, first aid kit, insect repellent and a fully charged phone.
  • Don’t Litter: Never litter. Leave the park as you found it to preserve its beauty.

More for Your Self-DriveTo really see Nairobi National Park by car and make memories, consider these extra tips:

  • Do Early Morning Game Drives: Wildlife is most active during the cool hours of dawn. Starting your Nairobi park game drive self-drive early increases your chances of seeing predators hunting and other animal behavior.

Pro tip: Head to the waterholes and riverbanks first, as animals often gather here for their morning drink before the day heats up.

  • Drive Slow and Observe: Take your time as you drive through the park and actively scan your surroundings for any signs of wildlife. Patience and keen observation is key to good sightings.
  • Use Viewing Points Strategically: The park has strategically located viewing points that offer great views and higher chances of seeing specific animals. These include the Impala Observation Point and Picnic Site, Koome’s Viewpoint, River Viewpoint, and the Leopard Cliff.
  • Consider a Local Guide (Optional): While this guide is for self-drive Nairobi safari, we recommend hiring a professional local guide like AjKenyaSafaris.com  to add to your experience with their knowledge on animal behavior, tracking and park ecology. With a professional guide you get to do game drives in a proper safari vehicle, 4×4 safari land cruiser or 4WD safari van and get more out of your visit. You leave all the planning to the experts.
  • Drive with the wind in mind: Animals, predators especially, heavily rely on scent. Driving in the direction of the wind could alert them to your presence making it harder to spot them.
