Nairobi Safari Walk: Your Guide to Walking with Kenyan Wildlife

The Nairobi Safari Walk was my very first safari experience. It is, like I like to say, when the safari bug bit. It’s been more than two decades since, yet the thrill hasn’t faded one bit.

Located 7km from the Nairobi City Center, this 2.5km walk offers an amazing opportunity to connect with Kenya’s natural heritage. It is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and is the perfect way to get up close with Kenyan wildlife on foot.

Your Adventure Awaits: What to Expect on the Safari Walk

What I love most about the Nairobi Safari Walk is that you’re not confined to a vehicle. You get to walk at your own pace along well-trodden paths that wind through recreated natural habitats. Get ready to be amazed by:

Majestic Creatures: Keep an eye out for the rare bongo antelope, albino zebra and pygmy hippo. You might also see big cats like lions and leopards in their spacious and naturalistic enclosures and playful primates like monkeys and baboons.

A wide bird variety: The Safari Walk is a birdwatcher’s haven with over 500 bird species including the Jackson’s Widowbird, secretary bird, Rameron Pigeon , and the Eastern Bronze-naped pigeon. Bring your binoculars to fully appreciate the many bird species that call this place home.

Fascinating Reptiles: See the reptiles, including the Nile crocodiles as they bask and move in their special environments.

Diverse Plant Life: The walk is also a living museum of indigenous trees and plants showcasing the varied flora and fauna of Kenya’s different ecological zones.

About the Author

Hi there? My name is Ian Waruingi, a KPSGA-certified guide and tour consultant for AJ Kenya Safaris. I’ve been to Nairobi National Park more times than I can count, planned countless tours here, and witnessed unforgettable moments (like did you know wildebeests can walk within minutes of birth? That one caught me by surprise!).

I’ve also watched baby elephants at the orphanage slurp down bottles of milk, chase each other around in the dust, and melt the hearts of everyone watching.

These moments, big and small, are why I absolutely adore this park, and I can’t wait to help you experience it for yourself.
