Wildlife in Africa
The sheer variety of Nairobi National Park wildlife never fails to surprise me. During your visit, you’ll have plenty of chances to see some of these amazing animals.
- Lions: Nairobi National Park is home to an estimated 30-50 lions. Look out for lion prides, often seen relaxing around Leopard Gorge, the rolling plains near Hippo Pools, areas around Athi River, and the Ivory Burning Site.
- Pro Tip: The best time to see lions if often early morning or late afternoon
- Rhinos: Nairobi National Park is a sanctuary for both black and white rhinos. The park’s rhino sanctuary provides a safe haven for over 101 black rhinos and 11 white rhinos.
- Giraffes: The Masai giraffe is a common sight, browsing on the acacia trees that dot the park’s plains. You can also visit the Giraffe Centre near Nairobi National Park for a more up close and personal experience.
- Zebras and Wildebeests: Large herds of plains zebras and wildebeests commonly graze on the southern plains and the central savannah particularly around the Whistling Thorn acacia trees.
- Cheetahs and Leopards: While more elusive, cheetahs and leopards are also found in the park. I’ve had some memorable sightings around leopard cliffs and out on the southern plains.
- Antelopes: You will see various antelopes, hartebeests, gazelles, impalas and waterbucks, each adapted to the different habitats in the park.
- Birds: For birders in Nairobi National Park, the park is a heaven. It has over 400 bird species, from the large ostrich to many small and colorful birds.
